KNBC is an audio and visual distortion of television signals broadcast over the 602-608 MHz spread of the electromagnetic spectrum from a tower in Los Angeles. The signals were captured and archived at Casey Reas' studio, then looped continuously as the data was extracted, amplified, and composed into a new stochastic audiovisual stream. The result is a continuous, generative collage that transforms broadcast television into something completely abstract.
I created the realtime generative sound for the piece in SuperCollider, building a system that could run continuously and respond to the same data streams driving the visuals. I also gathered source material, handled documentation, and assisted with the installation of the piece at Day for Night.
This project came out of my time working as a studio assistant for Casey Reas at UCLA, where I was studying Design & Media Arts.
